SAFETY, FORCE TESTING AND COMPLIANCY

Automated gates are generally installed for the protection of property and / or persons and should be safe in all aspects of use.  

An integral part of your automated gate system is regular Service and Maintenance.  As a general rule automated equipment should be serviced every six months on commercial sites, i.e. multiple residencies or business premises or annually for low usage gateways, i.e. domestic installations of up to twelve operations per day.

With all new installations you will receive a Declaration of Conformity.  At completion your gates will be ‘force tested’ and a certificate supplied.  You will also receive a ‘handover’ book which will detail the equipment installed and provide you with all the information you need to use your gates safely.  This will also include how to disconnect the automation to put your gates on to manual override should the need arise.  A CE mark will also be applied to the equipment.

What is CE marking?
 
Many products must meet legal requirements before they can be sold within the European Community, and must carry CE marking. CE marking attached to a product is a manufacturer's claim that it meets all the requirements of the European legislation.

Force Testing

A force test should be carried out annually whether commercial or domestic to ensure continued safety and this is often combined with a service visit.

Existing gates can be ‘retro’ fitted with safety upgrades to bring them up to compliancy standard.  

The umbrella standard for gates to comply is BSEN13241  

BS-EN13241-1 – Umbrella standard for gates and doors.  Consists of the below norms.

EN12453 – Areas on gates & doors where safety should be fitted (i.e. crushing and pull-in points) & defines how much force is allowed (400N) to be exerted on an object in these areas before backing off, and the allowed time before backing off (0.75 Seconds). This standard also clearly defines that the leading edge or danger point on a gate must be covered by an active safety device up to a height of 2.5 metres – the area of coverage required cannot be fulfilled by photocells!!

EN12445 – Defines the testing points on gates & doors, crucially the gate must be tested on crushing points (coming together points on swing gates, leading edge of a sliding gate) at intermittent heights (slider 500mm, 300mm, 50mm from stop), ( 50 mm up, vertically half way up gate, 300mm from top or 2500mm high for gates larger than 2500mm)  Tests must be made to achieve this standard!!

EN12978 – Defines self-test and resiliency characteristics of the transmitting system, critically must be Cat3 (EN-954-1 Cat3)   Radio systems do not comply with this norm

EN1760-2 – Defines the characteristics of the safety edge, what material it is made from, how fast it switches when depressed, how resistant to UV, Chemical damage etc.  Few safety edges meet this requirement.  Ask your manufacturer for certification and test certificates!!

All of these requirements MUST be fulfilled to meet the overall EN13241-1 standard for automatic gates & doors.
