Top Safety Accreditation for Access Automation Ltd

Access Automation Ltd has recently received accreditation from SAFEcontractor, a programme which recognises very high standards of health and safety practise amongst UK contractors.

The company’s application for SAFEcontractor accreditation was driven by the need for a uniform standard across the business and to ensure our commitment to a high standard of safe working practice is maintained.

John Kinge, Head of Risk at SAFEcontractor said, "Major organisations can no longer run the risk of employing contractors who are not able to prove that they have sound health and safety policies. More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that Access Automation has done. The firm’s high standard has set an example, which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector.".

Under the SAFEcontractor system, businesses undergo a vetting process, which examines health and safety procedures and their track record for safe practice. Those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users only via a website, www.safecontractor.com.

Employer-organisations who sign up to the scheme can access the database, enabling them to vet potential contractors before they even set foot on site. These employers agree that, as users of the scheme, they will engage only those who have received accreditation.

Over one hundred and fifty major nation-wide businesses, from several key sectors, have signed up to use the scheme when selecting contractors for services such as building, cleaning, maintenance, refurbishment or electrical and mechanical work.

Gate Safety Week

Gate Safety Week takes place from the 13 – 19 October 2014 and has been devised by the Powered Gate Group division of the Door and Hardware Federation. The Powered Gate Group is an industry body made up of 80 professional companies specialising in gate installation and maintenance and every member has undergone the extensive two day training Powered Gate Safety Diploma training course that is run by the Door and Hardware Federation.

The aim of Gate Safety Week is to raise awareness of the risks of accidents surrounding powered and automated gates and how they can be prevented. The Gate Safety Week website has been set up to provide a range of resources to help the public, practitioners and professionals understand the risks and dangers around powered gates as well as promoting safety messages in an engaging way that can be understood.

Gate Safety Week is aimed at everyone from professional installers, through to facilities managers, schools, housing associations, safety organisations and the general public.

Access Automation Ltd is playing an active part in this action campaign designed to dramatically improve safety of automated gates in the UK. In the months running up to the event Access Automation and fellow DHF Powered Gate Group members will be campaigning hard to raise awareness of the risks associated with automated gates.

More than two thirds of all automated gates installed in the UK do not comply with the latest legislation and could pose a serious safety risk. Even more worrying is the fact that unsafe installations are still being carried out by unqualified installers and gate companies who are quite willing to take dangerous short cuts in both gate manufacture and installation. Gate safety campaigners such as ourselves have organised Gate Safety Week to raise awareness of the dangers that powered gates pose and to advise as many people as possible on how to choose safe gates or make existing powered gates safe.

Britain’s leading manufacturers, suppliers, installers and maintainers of powered automatic gates and gate automation equipment who make up the DHF Powered Gate Group are also planning special events focusing on gate safety.

In addition the DHF is partnering with a number of influential organisations in safety, enforcement, inspection, education and security sectors who will be lending their support to the campaign in the coming months. The climax to the campaign will take place at Fencex, the fencing exhibition being held at Stoneleigh Exhibition Park, near Coventry on Wednesday 15th October.

The DHF set up it Powered Gate Group on behalf of the UK gate automation industry with encouragement from the Health and Safety Executive following the tragic deaths of two young children in accidents involving powered gates. It has developed extensive safety guidance which is followed by all responsible gate installers. It runs a training course which covers all aspects of safe gate installation which is recognised as the most stringent gate safety training in Europe.

With around 70% of existing powered gate installations proving to be non-compliant, householders and all those responsible for powered gates must take safety very seriously. We are confident that Gate Safety Week will play a vital part in significantly raising levels of gate safety and we are pleased to be making a real contribution.

Gate Safety Week 12th–18th October 2015

Access Automation Ltd is a member of the Door & Hardware Federation Powered Gate Group (PGG). We fully support their objectives to create awareness around the installation and maintenance of powered gates drawing particular attention to poor installations and maintenance.

The campaign is aimed to educate and inform both professional installers, industry contacts and the general public on the dangers centred around poorly installed and maintained powered gates.

Key messages of the campaign…

  • To encourage a user/owner to ask a specialist to check the operation and condition of their powered gates and report those that aren’t satisfactory.
  • To provide a neutral platform for organisations with common interests in the powered gates and powered gate industries.
  • To engage and educate specifiers, merchants, installers, inspectors, surveyors and users in the correct specification, supply, installation and operation of powered gates.
  • To ensure that installers and maintenance companies are aware that the safety of powered gates is required by law.
  • To highlight the liability and responsibilities that apply to powered gate installers.
  • To raise the importance of CE marking and what the DHF’s coveted ‘Safety Assured Mark’ means.

Powered gates can be dangerous and Gate Safety Week is about education, prevention and raising awareness.

The barriers are controlled by a ‘pre booked’ ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) parking system and offer a GSM based intercom system at each location.
